Certain realities exist today that our country has never seen. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we win the struggle to secure our borders. We no longer are afforded the luxury of allowing our borders to be so porous.
The effects of a slack border are both a danger to securing our Homeland from terrorist threats as well as securing our economy from the huge negative economic impacts of having between 11 and 15 million illegal aliens in our country. I do not propose we make these illegal aliens criminals, but we do need to abide by the rule of the law. We have a set policy for immigration into the United States, and we need to stick to that policy. We are a country that respects the rule of law, and it is time we start applying that law as it regards illegal immigration.
Here at home our first responders need to be given the resources to react in case of emergency. Many of the same preparations for homeland security are also necessary for our emergency responses to natural disasters. Our region is vulnerable to both natural disaster as well as terrorist plots. Ensuring local authorities are ready to act jointly with an organized and rapid response is critical. In my role as a Board member of a local non-profit hospital I have seen to it that we are a the top of our game in emergency response preparedness and will continue the fight to ensure that Homeland Security remains a top priority.
